More Revealed About ‘Gotham’; Love Interests And Villains

Gotham Season 3 is fast approaching, and the showrunners aren't holding back when it comes to pre-show reveals. Some of the show's cast and crew recently spoke to IGN at Fox's TCA after party, and we've learnt a lot of new information about what to expect when the show returns Monday September 19th. Hit next to find out what we've learned. Warning, potential spoilers for Gotham season 3 lie ahead. 1. Ivy's grown up, Bruce staying young We've known for a while now that Clare Foley will be replaced by Maggie Geha as an older version of Poison Ivy due to an encounter with an escaped metahuman. Executive producer John Stephens had a bit more to say about Ivy's transformation. "The idea of Poison Ivy came along because one of the escapees from Indian Hill has the power when he touches you he takes away years of your life, he ages you immediately. So he touches Ivy early on but he didn’t hold onto her for very long so he does a little bit of aging [to her]. So for us we really wanted to play with the idea of transformation. Version one of the character, version two. And so much of Ivy of the canon that we wanted to play, we had to make her a little older." This metahuman with ageing powers has the potential to escalate the show's timeline, bringing us older versions of characters such as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, or maybe even future Batman Bruce Wayne. Well, I'm afraid the last guess isn't on the cards. "We’re not going to be aging Batman up anytime soon," Stevens said firmly. 2. Bruce and Ivy will continue to interact Bruce Wayne and the aged up Ivy Pepper won't be romantically involved, but there will be some sort of relationship between the pair, says Bruce's actor David Mazouz. "They're definitely going to have a relationship with each other. It's not going to be a romantic one, necessarily. It's going to be more of a sister figure to him. They'll be very involved with each other. And they will have major influences in each others lives. She will be a major part of his life, especially towards the middle of this season." 3. Ivy won't have powers Despite being aged due to the result of another character's superpowers, it doesn't seem like Ivy Pepper will have powers of her own in season 3, according to new actress Maggie Geha. "I don’t think we’ll see any super powers stuff. I think that would be way further down the line especially since this is an origin story show. So I think it’s going to be more about discovering how other people perceive her and what means. A lot of people are focused on her sexuality. I think Ivy, in my opinion, doesn’t really feel sexual about anybody. I think if she notices this person is attracted to me, finds me appealing in a sexual way, I’m going to use that to my benefit. It’s more of a manipulative thing than anything." 4. Alfred won't be a bachelor much longer You may remember Alfred found himself attracted to Dr. Leslie Thompkins (then girlfriend of Jim Gordon) when he first met her last season. Well, while that didn't pan out, love is still in the air for Sean Pertwee's butler says Stephens. "Alfred finds love. He has a sixteen-year-old boy [Bruce] who, as these things happen, naturally kind of grows away from him. And suddenly someone enters his life who is connected to another character and Alfred is left with the idea of the possibility of another life there and it gives us a great storyline." 5. Lee is moving on from Jim It's not just Alfred who has a new relationship ahead of him. Apparently Morena Baccarin's Lee Thompkins will be moving on from father of her baby, and her new fella will be quite different than the law abiding (well, law abiding-ish) Jim. "He’s the scion of a particular Gotham crime family. I think hardcore fans their minds will immediately go to one person," said Stevens. This, combined with the fact that according to executive producer Ken Woodruff we "will definitely see family of Carmine Falcone and we will definitely see Carmine Falcone. He is not gone. He’s definitely still around", could suggest Lee might be raising Jim's child with a member of the Falcone family, perhaps Alberto or Mario? 6. Born on a monday... You may remember Arrow introduced a pre-zombified version of Solomon Grundy and never followed up on it. Well, they probably won't be doing that anytime soon, as Gotham looks to have taken dibs on the character. When asked about the character, Stephens had this to say. "It’s difficult to (talk about) without giving too much away but the idea of one is reincarnation, which is one where we obviously already crossed that hurdle. And the idea that someone would want to create reincarnation? Who out there would want to be interested in reincarnation? Don't expect to recognise Grundy when he comes to our screens later in the season. "When Solomon Grundy comes on, he will be a character we have not yet met" added Stephens. 7. Croc may appear earlier than expected According to Stephens "The Killer Croc thing we’ll see right at the beginning of the series. We’ll see like a proto version of that". While the actor has been cast, "he’s not somebody famous right now", and hasn't yet been revealed. 8. Is Strange doomed for this world? If you've seen any of the Gotham season 3 trailers, you'll be aware that BD's Wong Professor Hugo Strange will be returning to the show. Stephens did confirm that "he’s back in the second episode", but don't expect to him stick around for long. "Right now it’s a shorter arc. It’s like I said on the panel of the idea that we want to continually populate our world so we can pull those people in, especially when we can use New York actors and they’re available and we can bring them in. Because if you can bring Fish in and Hugo Strange in again and again, I think it makes the world seem full." 9. Mad Hatter won't be influenced by Arkham series While Benedict Samuel's (The Walking Dead) Mad Hatter will have plenty of comic-book influences, his character won't bare any conscious resemblance to the one who appeared in the Arkham series of video games. Stephens had this to say when discussing creating the character. "I feel like the character’s an amalgam as much anything. There’s a little bit of the reality from the Brubaker books but also from the New 52 and the Snyder books. There’s some of that, too. From the Batman Mad series in terms of the emotional drive that he has. Benedict is definitely taller than most versions of Jervis but he plays it with a level of naturalistic insanity that I think, he really fills out that pantheon really, really well. As the city sinks deeper into chaos, GOTHAM will continue to follow the evolving stories of the city’s most malevolent villains: THE PENGUIN (Robin Lord Taylor); EDWARD NYGMA/the future RIDDLER (Cory Michael Smith); SELINA KYLE/the future CATWOMAN (Camren Bicondova); BARBARA KEAN (Erin Richards), TABITHA GALAVAN/TIGRESS (Jessica Lucas) and BUTCH GILZEAN (Drew Powell). The series also will catch up with the future POISON IVY (Maggie Geha), who, after an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, finds herself reborn as a young woman who’s harnessed the full power of her charms; and will dive into the origin stories of JERVIS TETCH/MAD HATTER (Benedict Samuel), a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness; and the TWEED BROTHERS.
