Speaking with IGN about the process behind casting Adam Warlock for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, Gunn revealed that he was cut from this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 in order to flesh out Nebula’s role:
“In the original treatment, even before it became a treatment, Adam Warlock was a major character… And the screenplay was just too busy, there were too many characters. I couldn’t do Nebula justice and Adam Warlock justice and have both in there so I decided to save Adam for another day.”
It’s worth keeping in mind that Gunn has already explained that Adam Warlock will have a big part in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film – presumably to set up other cosmic Marvel stories that are being planned – so fans of the Golden Gladiator will still have a lot to look forward to.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 is still playing in theaters. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, and Kurt Russell as Ego. Many of these same characters are set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, its sequel, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3.
