Details Behind ‘Agent Carter’ Cancellation & Fate Emerge

It was certainly a sad day for a lot Marvel fans when we got confirmation that ABC’s Agent Carter got cancelled. While the series was mostly praised by critics, the ratings never really took off, and after only two seasons the show ended.

Today we got more information on why the show was ultimately cancelled and why it couldn’t have been picked up by Netflix.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television shed a little more light on the details about the cancellation.

“Unlike the movie studio where they can say, ‘In 2019 we’re making Captain Marvel,’ the television division doesn’t have that ability. We are, at the end of the day, beholden to the network that we’re on. So for all of you Agent Carter fans out there, we didn’t cancel the show.”

As for the hope many fans had for Agent Carter to get picked up by Netflix and share the fate of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the company’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos explained.

“We’re looking for truly original brands to own, and in that Marvel space we already have [the above mentioned shows] – so that was mostly why. They also have some output deal complexities. So when you pick it up, being able to pick it up globally is difficult even after it’s canceled. Some of those output partners still had it on the air, so they would argue it’s covered by their output [deals]. Unfortunately, it was a business decision more than a creative one.”

So there you have it, the revival of Agent Carter was just too much of a long shot. Still we hope Marvel finds the way to bring this great character back in some form in the future.
