‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Was Prevented From Using S.W.O.R.D. Early On

Agents of SHIELD producer Jeffrey Bell has revealed that the show wanted to use SWORD but was kept from doing so early on.

During its seven-season run, Agents of SHIELD included a lot of different connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly during its early seasons. However, the show quickly revealed that it was more interested in doing its own thing and went on to be a fine installment all the same with its own villains, heroes, and world-saving storylines. One thing it wanted to add but was not allowed to, however, was the SWORD organization.

In the comics SWORD is a counterpart to SHIELD. Specifically, the organization deals with extraterrestrial threats and defends the world from those. While we do know that SWORD will be involved in the upcoming Disney Plus WandaVision series and that an Avengers: Infinity War prop revealed a connection to the organization, the people behind the Agents of SHIELD wanted to introduce the organization in their show.

During a press tour event, Agents of SHIELD producer Jeffrey Bell revealed that they wanted to introduce SWORD early in the series but were quickly shut down:

“We tried S.W.O.R.D. early [in the series] and we were shut down.”
