‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Changing Ghost Rider’s Origin

Agents of SHIELD has changed a lot since its pilot, and things are about to shift massively in Season 4. With a new director, new villains and Ghost Rider featuring expect to see quite a few shocks this year. It sounds like one shock will be Ghost Rider’s origin story. When pushed about his introduction, Executive Producer Jed Whedon said that Robbie Reyes won’t have the backstory of his comic counterpart.

Reyes’ comic book origin has ties to the pill Calvin Zabo uses to become Hyde. Hyde is a character who featured in Agents of SHIELD Season 2, but will he return to play a part in the Ghost Rider story? TV Line asked Whedon if Reyes’ entrance meant a return for Kyle MacLachan as Cal, but it sounds like they’re making Ghost Rider’s history a mystery.

“We can’t say much about what we’re going to do with [Robbie Reyes’] origin, but we are doing our own spin on it,” Whedon said. “We don’t want people who have read the comics to know exactly what’s coming.”

Whedon did say that he would love to see MacLachan back on the show, as would most of the viewers. After how his character ended Season 2 he’d probably have to come back in a very different form. He’s also not really in a position to make any more of his Hyde pills. Although the writers could always find a way around that.

We already know from Chloe Bennet that her character, Daisy Johnson, runs in to Ghost Rider this season. Given that Cal is her father, the fourth season could well pull those three well loved characters in to their own sub-plot. However, Johnson’s transformation in to Quake shows that SHIELD isn’t afraid of taking a huge turn away from the source material.

I spend all my time watching things then writing about them. Can't really complain.
