Alex Kurtzman Unsure Of Future Involvement In Dark Universe Series

After a rocky start with The Mummy underperforming and failing to impress critics, it appears that Universal’s Dark Universe setting may be in a bit of turmoil as the creative leader of the series – Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, Star Trek) – may be thinking of backing away from the setting.

Alex Kurtzman spoke with IGN at the press tour for the Television Critics Association. When asked about whether or not he’d be working on future installments to the Dark Universe, the director gave a rather ambivalent response:

“You know the truth is, I don’t know. I really don’t know. I haven’t really decided… I have to stay interested in [a franchise to keep working on it]. I have to feel like my passion is there for it. I think in the case of Star Trek if your passion isn’t there you shouldn’t be doing it.”

Alex Kurtzman is currently still tapped to produce Bill Condon’s The Bride of Frankenstein, which will arrive in 2019, so he may still be involved in the development of future Dark Universe movies yet. But after The Mummy was buried at the box office, it’s doubtful that he’ll be sitting in the director’s chair of any other movie in this series.

The Mummy is still in theaters. The movie’s cast includes Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Javier Botet. Presuming that Universal continues with the Dark Universe, the next installment will be The Bride of Frankenstein, which will be released on February 14, 2019. Other projects that are in development for the setting include reboots of Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Wolf Man, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
