‘The Mummy’ Director Alex Kurtzman Says Film Finds Humanity In Monsters

Popcorn movie screenwriter Alex Kurtzman recently had a short interview over his directorial debut with The Mummy. In it, he explains what appealed to him about the project in the first place, along with the kind of abilities we’ll see the movie’s villain use.

While he’s known for relying a lot on spectacle with the projects that he’s worked on, Kurtzman cites the humanity seen in Universal’s monsters as being the primary reason that he’s directing the movie – and noted that this is something he wanted to reflect in his own movie.

“[I fell in love with Universal’s monsters because of] the deep humanity I felt like these monsters were actually reflecting… They say something about who we are.”

Kurtzman also took a moment to describe the Mummy’s powers. Given that she was a potential Pharaoh who was denied the opportunity to claim the throne, her powers reflect this by focusing on “romance and entracement” as she influences others to join her cause. Unfortunately, that’s not the only thing she can do.

“She has control over and power to get into your mind, and creepy crawlies tend to like her when she’s around.”

The Mummy rises on on June 9, 2017. The movie’s cast includes Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, and Russel Crowe. Two subsequent installments of the Universal Monsters Shared Universe will be released on April 13, 2018 and February 15, 2019. Other projects that are in development for the setting include reboots of Van Helsing, Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Bride Of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and Wolf Man.
