'Alien: Covenant' Lands No. 1 Spot With $36M; 'Guardians 2' Gets Bumped To 2nd With $35.1M. It's the film's opening weekend at the box office.

Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant took the number one spot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this week, grossing an estimated $36 million at the domestic box office. This makes the film the third-highest opening of the entire Alien franchise, coming in after Alien vs. Predator and Prometheus, which is in number one.

It’s not an amazing opening and one can wonder if that’s because it might not have stuck with some fans. Critically, it was either hated or had a lukewarm reception. The film cost more than $90 million to make and it comes right in the middle of a pretty packed month, between Guardians 2 and next week’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Dropping to second place is James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $35.1 million in its third week, bringing its gross domestic total to $301.7 million. The film was in first place for two weeks and has already successfully conquered both the domestic and international box office.

In third place, Everything, Everything, based on Nicola Yoon’s young adult romance novel, grossed $12 million in its first weekend. The Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn comedy, Snatched, landed in fourth place with a gross total of $7.6 million. Rounding out the top five is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul with $7 million.
