Andrew Garfield Discusses ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Struggles

At 33, Andrew Garfield has had the luxury of working with some of the greatest living directors. Despite having acted in films before, many were introduced to him in David Fincher’s The Social Network, where he portrayed Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin alongside Jesse Eisenberg’s Mark Zuckerberg. Garfield’s incredible performance came off of the heels of the announcement that he would be portraying Peter Parker in Sony and Marc Webb’s rebooted The Amazing Spider-Man film. Garfield would go on to play the webhead for two films, until the subpar performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the eventual deal between Sony and Marvel to put the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Unfortunately for Garfield, this signified that his turn as Spidey would be cut short, and the proposed The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was cancelled. Garfield was eventually replaced by Tom Holland, to whom fans have universally loved since his memorable debut in Captain America: Civil War. 

Despite his journey in the superhero tights coming to an abrupt end, Garfield has had the opportunity to work with both Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese in Hacksaw Ridge and Silence. Both his performances in these two films have been praised by critics and audiences alike, and are also in contention for the upcoming Academy Awards. While promoting his two films, Garfield got a chance to reflect on his Spider-Man experiences again, to which he felt the process had “a different set of values and a different hierarchy of priorities. And we all know what those are. I struggled with that. I wasn’t having the total experience that I remembered having.”

Garfield admits that he dedicates so much passion to his roles, and felt shortchanged when the requirements for Spidey didn’t match his ambitions. He then goes on to express how his two latest films gave him the opportunity to commit fully in ways he hasn’t had the chance to during his time with The Amazing Spider-Man films.

“The last “total experience” he could recall was “The Social Network.” The problem, he suggested, was that his level of serious commitment may have been wasted in a pair of movies about a guy in tights — which is why “Silence” and “Hacksaw Ridge” came at just the right time. “What I realized is that I can’t help but give my full self to something,” he said. “I can end up pouring myself into a bucket with a hole in it. I knew that with Martin Scorsese, he creates a container from the moment he sends you three boxes of research. By the time you show up on set, there are no leaks, and you can just inhabit the character’s journey.”
