Andrew Garfield Opens Up About ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Failures

Andrew Garfield was given only two chances to portray Peter Parker as the “Amazing Spider-Man,” helmed by Marc Webb and considered somewhat divisive when the movie and its sequel released in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

And it turns out Andrew Garfield is also a critic, as he recently opened up to THR about what went wrong with Sony‘s plans for a shared Spidey universe, featuring a Sinister Six film, Venom spinoff, and a long running list of planned sequels. Garfield has been critical of the series before, notably when he told the L.A. Times that the franchise had a lot of “missed opportunities.”

More recently during Andrew Garfield’s roundtable with THR, the actor responded to a comment by Dev Patel saying he felt like he was “perpetuating something that’s toxic,” calling the movies “shallow” and lacking of depth, “no matter how much depth was attempted.”

“Spider-Man was my favorite superhero, my first superhero costume when I was a 3-year-old at Halloween. I was like, there’s millions of young people watching who are hungry for someone to say, ‘You’re OK. You’re seen very deeply.’ And more often than not the opportunity is not taken, and it is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking because there is so much medicine that could be delivered through those films.”

Of course, The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel have a fair number of fans, still. Many of them found Andrew Garfield’s portrayal and banter behind the mask to be excellent, while many others found his Peter Parker storyline and various other plot threads to be, as Garfield would seem to put it, somewhat shallow.
