Andy Serkis ‘Cringed’ When Snoke Was Killed By Kylo Ren In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will forever be known as the most subversive chapter in the Skywalker Saga. The subversive aspects of the film are what make it so polarizing to fans, and one aspect in particular that divided fans (and even divided this character in question) is when Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) kills Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) in the epic throne room sequence.

Some praised Rian Johnson’s decision to kill off Snoke as a nice change of pace while others criticized it because of the lack of a backstory for the character among other reasons. Either way, seeing Kylo Ren slice Snoke in half really caught audiences off-guard.

Andy Serkis was recently asked about having Snoke killed off earlier in the Sequel Trilogy than expected – especially after being set-up as perhaps the most powerful antagonist of the Sequel Trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Serkis revealed to EW that he “cringed” when Kylo Ren killed his master:

“So cruel. He’s disposed of so early on in his career.”

Serkis also reflected on the fact that he was killed off earlier-than-expected in Marvel’s Black Panther as Ulysses Klaue. With that in mind, he still feels excited at the prospect of these types of roles even if that means somehow returning to Star Wars as Snoke:

“It’s a Star Wars movie, anything can happen. I’m saying this with the hope that someone’s listening out there.

With Snoke now (likely) out of the picture, Kylo Ren is now the Supreme Leader of the First Order – much to the dismay of General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson). With Star Wars: Episode IX set to conclude the sequel trilogy and the Skywalker saga next year, we’ll find out how everything turns out following the events of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Episode IX stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Dominic Monaghan, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and Mark Hamill.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters December 20, 2019.
