Who will wield the shield?
Although many fans assumed that Sam Wilson would take up the role of Captain America following the finale of Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Mackie pointed out that Falcon never officially said he’d take the shield. But with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier coming to Disney Plus in the next few months, it seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally pass the Captain America role over from Steve Rogers. Mackie’s comments come soon after the star teased the future of Marvel’s phase four films.
When appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, Anthony Mackie explained that when fans last saw Sam Wilson in Endgame, he didn’t feel like he owned the shield. However, he went on to say that a huge portion of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will focus on who really winds up taking on the Captain America mantle and wielding the shield. Although thanks to a recently leaked toy, it definitely seems like Sam will eventually come around to the idea of following in Steve’s footsteps.
“At the the end of Endgame, Sam didn’t accept the shield. If you remember, he told Steve, ‘It doesn’t feel right because this shield is yours.’ So, you know, the show is a long way of figuring around who’s gonna be Captain America. Where the shield’s gonna end up and if Captain America, if that moniker is gonna come back and somebody’s gonna hold that moniker again.”
What do you make of Anthony Mackie’s Captain America comments? Do you think he’ll appear on the big-screen as Captain America? Are you excited for the upcoming Disney Plus series? Sound-off in the comments below!
