Warner Bros.’ financially successful Aquaman is set to overtake The Dark Knight Rises as the highest-grossing DC film at the box office and the studio is reportedly eager to move forward with a sequel to the King of Atlantis’ solo film. Now, Deadline reports Warner Bros. is “courting” Aquaman director James Wan to return for the sequel and that a “whale-sized deal” will likely be needed to close a deal.
James Wan’s spokesman said the filmmaker is currently taking a break and the outlet’s studio sources reportedly say he is waiting to see a “seaworthy” script before a deal will happen. The project will remain in development until such a deal closes. The outlet notes that James Wan is “deeply invested” is the world creation aspect of Aquaman and views the underwater corner of the DC Extended Universe as a fantasy setting potentially comparable to the realms of other franchises, including Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter.
