During the climactic underwater battle in Aquaman, Arthur Curry and Mera passionately kiss each other while the fight wages on before the titular hero heads off the confront his half-brother Orm. While the kiss lasts for roughly 20 seconds as the camera pans around both characters, audiences in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia took to social media to note that the scene was cut. According to the outlet, moviegoers reported the kiss was included in Indonesian IMAX theaters despite being absent in standard ones.
Saudi Arabia, which only lifted a 35-year theater ban last year, is considered one of the most heavily censored media nations in the world with a kiss scene having also been removed from Black Panther when the country opened its doors the Hollywood blockbusters. In Indonesia, the state agency Lembaga Sensor Film is responsible for vetting film and television content shown in the country.
