‘Aquaman’ Producer Addresses The Four-Year Gap Between Films

Aquaman was released in December and went on to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, but Aquaman 2 isn’t dropping until December 16, 2022. Series producer Peter Safran recently explained the four-year wait.

Producer Peter Safran recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the rather large gap in time between  Aquaman films. Four years goes against the typical studio approach, which is to capitalize on a hot property by getting the follow-up out in theaters as quickly as possible. However, it seems the producers here are of a different mind when it comes to the wettest DC property. As it turns out, Safran has been a long-time collaborator of Aquaman director James Wan’s. The duo previously collaborated on The Conjuring films and they are now adopting that approach to Aquaman and the announced spinoff The Trench. Safran explains:

“We’ve definitely taken a page from our Conjuring playbook, which is: You’ve got the mothership, which is Aquaman, but there are so many great stories to tell within that universe of itself, that Atlantean universe.”

The producer went on to say that Warner Bros. did not pressure them to move quickly on a sequel. Instead, the executives seemed to encourage the pair’s shared ideology:

“[Hamada], myself and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: You want to do it right. You don’t want to do it fast. You just want to do it right.”

Do you agree with this approach to Aquaman 2 and The Trench? Do you think it is for the best? Sound off in the comments below and let us know what you think!

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.

Aquaman is now available on Digitial HD and will be released on 4K UHD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD on March 26, 2019.
