‘Aquaman’: James Wan Says Julie Andrews’ Character Is Earth’s ‘Most Powerful Creature’

Mary Poppins Returns is opening on the same week as Aquaman, but to everyone’s surprise, the original Mary Poppins has a role in the latter film. That’s right, Academy Award-winner Julie Andrews will lend her voice talents to the role of Karathen, who is described to be an undersea creature that holds the secrets for Arthur Curry and his journey to unite the undersea and surface worlds.

Director James Wan took to Twitter to respond to EW’s reveal to describe the true power of Julie Andrews as Karathen within the context of Earth in the DC Extended Universe canon:

On casting her to voice Karathen, Aquaman producer Peter Safran had this to say:

“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered. And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer.”
