The film which features Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis in his first-ever standalone feature film managed a total of $1.88 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $331.37 million, and topping the domestic box office take of Batman v Superman ($330M). Compared to the rest of the franchise, the film ranks in second, only behind the $412 million gross of Wonder Woman in North America.
Globally, Aquaman has already taken the number one spot in the franchise with its worldwide total and is also the highest-grossing DC film of all time.
A sequel is currently in the works. Warner Bros. has tapped Aquaman writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to return to pen the script. Jason Momoa is expected to reprise his role.
Based on characters created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the script has been written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, Wan and Beall. Peter Safran and Rob Cowan have produced the film with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Jon Berg, Johns, and Walter Hamada serving as executive producers.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.

Aquaman is now playing. The DCEU will continue next with Shazam! which will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019, and will be followed by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019.
