With Aquaman making a billion dollars at the worldwide box office and becoming the most successful DC movie to date, Warner Bros. now has big plans for the franchise. The studio is currently developing a Trench spin-off film from writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. The Aquaman spin-off is said to lean more towards the horror genre. Warner Bros. also recently dated Aquaman 2, which will come out on December 16, 2022. Producer Peter Safran revealed at an Aquaman exhibit opening on Tuesday that The Trench will take place after the first film and will not feature Arthur or Mera. Peter Sarant also shared with The Hollywood Reporter why a Trench film is being made:
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
Peter Safran also talked about the potential of an “Atlantean” cinematic universe and it being inspired by James Wan’s other successful franchise:
“We’ve definitely taken a page from our Conjuring playbook, which is: you’ve got the mothership, which is Aquaman, but there are so many great stories to tell within that universe of itself, that Atlantean universe.”
