Aquaman doesn’t open in U.S. theaters for another two weeks, but sequel talks have already begun at Warner Bros. Pictures, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter.
According to the trade, Aquaman is currently on track to open with $65 million at the North American box office later this month and top Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and Paramount’s Transformers spin-off Bumblebee. This has led Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich to begin discussions on a sequel, but things are still at an early stage as a writer has not yet been commissioned by the studio.
Critics have already seen Aquaman and word of mouth so far has been positive, with some even calling it the best DC Extended Universe movie to date. Amazon Prime members will be able to see Aquaman six days before its U.S. release this December at select theater chains. While the special screening is ahead of the U.S. release date, major Asian and European markets have an earlier release date; the film releases in China on December 7th.
Based on characters created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, James Wan and Beall. Peter Safran and Rob Cowan produced the film, with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada serving as executive producers.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.
Aquaman hits U.S. theaters on December 21, 2018.
