Warner Bros. is reportedly courting director James Wan to return for a direct sequel to the box office hit Aquaman, but the studio has already hired writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a script for a spin-off centered on the terrifying creatures known as The Trench. Full details on the story are currently unknown, though the film will be set in the kingdom of the Trench and will not feature main cast members from Aquaman. James Wan and Peter Safran will produce The Trench, with the project reportedly having a more modest budget than most DC superhero films.
In the comics, The Trench are an underwater species who survived the fall of Atlantis ages ago. The creatures appeared in the Aquaman film during a scene in which they attacked Arthur Curry and Mera on board a stolen boat.
Noah Gardner & Aidan Fitzgerald previously worked as assistants at J. J. Abrams Bad Robot and also wrote a screenplay for a submarine thriller titled The Volos.
