Audiences were introduced to Arnim Zola in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, but new concept art has shown that Zola was supposed to appear in Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man.
Concept art was released by Josh Nizzi showed that Zola was set to appear in the opening scene in which Hank Pym was at S.H.I.E.L.D. meeting with Stark, Agent Carter and Mitchell Carson. Additional artwork from the Mavel film was released showing the many different of the army of ants that supported Scott Lang.
Zola first debuted in Captain America: The First Avenger and was a Nazi biochemist who worked with Red Skull. Their goal was to capture the energy of the Tesseract. He appears later in the sequel, Captain America: Winter Solider and has been digitized in order to preserve his mind.
The scene in Ant-Man would have been taking place 17 years after the death of Zola, so he would have had to appear in a digital form. Which could have made for a very interesting meeting.
An Ant-Man sequel is already in the works, titled Ant-Man and The Wasp. Peyton Reed will be returning to the franchise.
In a new interview with Moviefone, Reed, who will return as director for the sequel, he discussed some interesting components of the follow-up. When asked if the sequel will do what most sequels do nowadays, and feel the need to be bigger, Reed downplayed those claims:
No, I think we like our little Ant-Man corner of the universe. Because it’s a whole different vibe tonally, but also just in terms of who Scott Lang, who Ant-Man is: he is a guy who is maybe not so sure he wants to be like this Avenger-style, full-on superhero.
He’s got a kid, and this is the inner conflict with him, and he’s very much just like a normal guy who has come into contact with some incredible power. So, we like that aspect of kind of like it being its own little corner of the universe.
Ant-Man and The Wasp opens in theaters on July 6, 2018.
