‘Arrow’ Death To Undo Recent Character Arcs

The following contains spoiler for “Eleven-Fifty-Nine” of Arrow.

This season of Arrow has brought about some major changes, including the break up of Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and Oliver (Stephen Amell), causing Felicity to leave the “Arrow team” and the death of Laurel Lance/Black Canary (Katie Cassidy). As a result of this major character death, Felicity’s character arc will be changing.

Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim explained that this tragic event causes a change within Felicty and allows her to re-think recent decisions.

“She’s broken up with Oliver and she’s also broken up with the team essentially. And in Episode 19 [‘Canary Cry’], we’ll see the undoing of one of those decisions. She could come back to the team and that does not mean that she’s back together with Oliver.”

As Guggenheim hinted before the airing of “Eleven-Fifty-Nine” the death of Laurel might not mean the end of her character. It has already been announced that Laurel will be appearing on The Flash as her Earth 2 counterpart.

“This is the episode where you find out who’s in the grave. Dead is not goodbye. We definitely recognize across all three shows [Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow] that when we kill off a character, it means something different now. I’m not going to put a qualitative judgment on whether it’s more or less impactful. I’ll leave that up to the audience. But certainly, we acknowledge that there’s a difference. Arrow much more so than Flash or Legends, for a lot of reasons, it traffics in death. For better or for worse, death is a part of the show. What we’re finding as we’re pushing into season five, the show has to evolve. The concept of death on the show is evolving and changing as we’ve seen with Sara Lance. As the show has evolved, so has death.”

Arrow returns on Wednesday, April 27 at 8 pm EST on The CW.
