The name “Elseworlds” comes from the name of comics like Batman: The Killing Joke, Watchmen, Superman: Red Son, and other stories that take place outside of the main DC continuity. The latest Arrowverse crossover featured Oliver and Barry switching superhero roles and antagonist John Deegan becoming a black-suited Superman, in an alternate reality. However, Elseworlds wasn’t always the title for the crossover.
Guggenheim revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the crossover was initially titled Identity Crisis, the same name as Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales’s 2004 seven-issue series. Guggenheim shared why they decided to ultimately call it something something else:
“The problem is that ‘Identity Crisis’ is another, different iconic DC story. While the title would work perfectly for this, it would really be false advertising, because we’re obviously not doing the Brad Meltzer, Rags Morales Identity Crisis story.”
Guggenheim went on to say that they could adapt the Identity Crisis storyline someday in the Arrowverse.
