‘Arrow’ Will Force Oliver Queen To Confront His Past

Stephen Amell ArrowIn this week’s episode of Arrow, Oliver will be forced to confront his past and it will change the way we look back at his time spent as the murderous vigilante during his first year back in Star(ling) City.

Rather than focusing on the present day storyline while Prometheus tortures a captive Oliver, this week will instead feature a flashback-heavy episode as the series does once every year with guest star Dolph Lundgren returning as Konstantin Kovar. Season five’s flashbacks themselves will come to a head as Oliver will finally have his confrontation with the corrupt Russian governor.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim referred to this week’s episode as “one of the darkest episodes we’ve ever done.”

Oliver Queen himself, Stephen Amell explained the goal of the flashbacks this year is to show what led to Oliver becoming the ruthless killer he was during his first year as a crimefighter:

“Part of the biggest thing that we’re explaining in season 5 is what was Oliver’s motivation? What was his mindset in the early part of season 1? Essentially, to the same extent, what was his mindset when he really became this person in Russia?”

Guggenheim also teased that season 5 will leave us with a changed perspective at how we look back on Oliver’s motivations during season one:

“If we’ve done our job with season 5 correctly, if we stick the landing on all of this, by the end of the season, our hope is that you will look at Oliver’s killing in a completely different light and look at it in a totally different way. And look at his motivations for killing in a different way, in a more complex, more nuanced way. My hope is the whole season will kind of answer that question if we pull it off.”

THE BREAKING POINT — Prometheus (Josh Segarra) goes to great lengths to break Oliver (Stephen Amell). Meanwhile, in the flashbacks, Anatoly (guest star David Nykl) becomes worried about Oliver’s increasingly violent tendencies, which come to a head in a brutal confrontation. Kevin Tancharoen directed the episode written by Brian Ford Sullivan & Emilio Ortega Aldrich (#517). Original airdate 3/22/2017.
