The deal, which is Ava DuVernay’s first agreement with any studio, is set to start in January 2019 and is reportedly in the $100 million range. Under the agreement, DuVernay and her Foward company Forward Movement will develop television projects exclusively for Warner Bros. The deal covers drama shows, comedy series, documentaries, digital content, event projects, and longer form projects for broadcast and cable, premium cable, streaming services, and other platforms.
Ava DuVernay made the following statement to the outlet:
“I’ve had nothing but beautiful experiences working with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner and Brett Paul. They love and support artists in wonderful and nourishing ways. They work within a traditional studio headed by Kevin Tsujihara that is stirring with untraditional energy and fresh protocols for intentional, inclusive image-making. Warner Bros. is a terrific partner about matters of visibility and belonging for all kinds and cultures of people, which is our mission at Forward Movement. I couldn’t be happier to call Warner Bros. TV my production home.”
Warner Bros. TV Group President and Chief Content Officer Peter Roth said on Monday:
“Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented writer, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire with her art is exceeded only by her ability to entertain. We have had the great pleasure of working with her on Queen Sugar and The Red Line, and we are extremely excited about the new stories she has to tell.”
DuVernay is set to director Warner Bros. and DC’s New Gods film, which will be based on characters created and designed by Jack Kirby. Details on the film are currently unknown, though comic book incarnations of the New Gods have included characters such as Granny Goodness, Desaad, Godfrey, and the powerful villain Darkseid.
New Gods is one of the many projects being developed by Warner Bros and DC, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Birds of Prey, Black Adam, Cyborg, Supergirl, a Deathstroke film, and a Joker origin movie set outside of the DCEU.
