Avatar producer Jon Landau has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo from one of the James Cameron-directed sequels.

The long-awaited Avatar sequels were some of the projects that were put on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, but a new Instagram post by producer Jon Landau has revealed that they have finally resumed production. Landau shared a behind-the-scenes photo from one of the Avatar sequels, giving fans a sneak peek at a scene that was filmed this week.

Plot details remain under wraps. The sequels will continue to bring the world of Pandora to life and expand Cameron’s vision as they explore new locations on the planet not seen in the first film. The sequels are said to be four standalone experiences that will form together as one epic saga. A recent report revealed a massive budget of around $250 million per sequel. The first Avatar, which cost $237 million to produce, managed to gross $2.79 billion at the worldwide box office and remains the second-highest-grossing film of all time behind Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame.

Here is the official synopsis for the first Avatar film:

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, David Thewlis. The first sequel is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
