Fans had long speculated that the film’s title was Avengers: Endgame due to a line by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) towards the end of Infinity War. After Strange willingly surrenders the Time Stone in exchange for Thanos’ word that he won’t kill Tony Stark, Tony demands an explanation from the Sorcerer Supreme, who gives him the following response before turning to dust:
“We’re in the endgame now.”
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo had previously stated that the film would not be titled Endgame or any other line spoken in Infinity War, but it appears that the two were lying to keep the title a secret. The Avengers 4 title was finally revealed at the end of the film’s first trailer, which also announced that it’s now hitting theaters earlier than expected.
Here’s the official synopsis for Avengers: Endgame:
“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
