Avengers: Endgame features many emotional moments throughout its three-hour runtime, including the much-awaited reunion between Captain America, Falcon, and Bucky. The trio team up with the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take down Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his army during the film’s third act. During one of the final moments in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America chose to pass on his iconic role to Falcon, instead of his childhood friend Bucky.
Fans have talked back and forth about whether or not Falcon deserved to become the next Captain America instead of Bucky. While talking to ComicBook.com‘s Brandon Davis recently, Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo explained why it made sense for Falcon to become Captain America instead of Bucky.
“Cap and Bucky are brothers but you know what’s interesting about them is they’re very different people and I think that Bucky always has the ability to have his mind corrupted, it can always be taken over by someone else.”
Joe Russo then further explained why Bucky’s mental vulnerability proves that Falcon is the better fit for the Captain America role.
“That hasn’t been resolved for him and Sam has his free will and I think that Sam also had a similar ethic as Cap as far as service goes in the military.”
The Avengers: Endgame co-director continued to explain why Falcon’s life experiences make him perfect for the Captain America mantle.
“Sam still retains that spirit of service to the community and he lives in that circle very clearly in the movies.”
Russo then explained that even Bucky himself is fine with Falcon becoming Captain America after Avengers: Endgame.
“Comic books and movies are very different and our interpretation of the characters if you’ve been following the movies are very different from what the books are so as it stands in these films, Bucky is still a damaged character who I think feels like he doesn’t want the shield and I think that ultimately Sam is a character with free will who is the closest in morality to what Cap was and Cap believes deserves it.”
