‘The Avengers:’ Marvel Artist Shares Alternate Chitauri Ship Designs

Since 2012 in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve had Ultron, the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D., space battles between a god and a green monster…oh, and half of the universe being snapped out of existence by the very protagonist first seen way back in 2012. Yes, much has changed since The Avengers first hit theaters, but like many films, there are plenty of hints and revelations revealed by those working behind the scenes of that film that come to light after the fact. Today is such an example.

Charlie Wen, co-head and founder of Visual Development at Marvel Studios, took to social media a few days ago to share a bit of concept art from The Avengers. And this art compared a much different design and look for the Chitauri carriers that brought the aliens into New York to battle against The Avengers.

In his caption, Wen writes: “Initial Avengers brainstorm sketch for Chitauri Jumbo carriers: these were gigantic flying serpent-like creatures that carried Thanos’ troops into battle against the Avengers. This particular sketch was a bit low-tech for what we eventually needed, but I still enjoy having the pilot driving the behemoth;). All the “pods” you see underneath the creature are Chitauri that would have dive-bombed onto their target.”

Here, have a look at the Avengers art that Charlie Wen shared on his Instagram page:

Given the change between the conceptual art stage and the final design itself, what do you think of this alternate design for the Chitauri carriers in The Avengers? Would you like to have seen these in the film or perhaps if they make a return at another point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let us know in the comments below.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
