‘Avengers: Endgame’ Writers Reveal An Alternate Death Nearly Happened

Warning: The following post contains major Avengers: Endgame spoilers!

Avengers: Endgame co-writers co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed an alternate character nearly sacrificed their life during an interview with the New York Times.

Avengers: Endgame centered on our heroes’ efforts to travel back in time and retrieve the Infinity Stones in order to reverse Thanos’ decimation, with Hawkeye and Black Widow being the ones tasked with collecting the Soul Stone. Of course, retrieving the stone required a sacrifice and while the two long-time friends argued over who would take the fatal leap for a long time, it was ultimately Black Widow who fell to her death. However, Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely revealed that an early draft of the script had Hawkeye sacrificing himself, but visual effects producer Jen Underdahl urged the screenwriters to reconsider:

“There was, for sure. Jen Underdahl, our visual effects producer, read an outline or draft where Hawkeye goes over. And she goes, ‘Don’t you take this away from her.’ I actually get emotional thinking about it.”

Christopher Markus then explained why it would not have been right for Hawkeye to sacrifice himself:

“And it was true, it was him taking the hit for her. It was melodramatic to have him die and not get his family back. And it is only right and proper that she’s done.”

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo,  Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame is now playing in theaters.
