‘Avengers: Endgame’ Directors On Approaching Captain Marvel’s Powers

As we get closer to the release of Avengers: Endgame, the problem of Captain Marvel perhaps being too powerful has left fans wondering how Thanos will still be a threat to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with her with them. However, it seems Joe and Anthony Russo have an answer to that.

Joe and Anthony Russo recently sat down with CinemaBlend to talk about Captain Marvel’s role in Avengers: Endgame. During the interview, both directors were asked how a powerful character like Carol Danvers will come into play for the fight against Thanos and the directors had a response to the issue of Carol Danvers being one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s what they had to say:

“It’s always a concern of ours about overpowering characters, because the reason that people relate to these characters is their humanity, and that they’re flawed. And the reason we love working so much with Captain America was that he was limited, and his heart was his superpower, you know? So we’re all acutely aware of the dangers of having an overly powerful character. [But] we like sensitive storytelling, so… we found a thoughtful way through it.”

Through storytelling, Joe and Anthony Russo plan to introduce Captain Marvel’s humanity into Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps by making the characters more human it helps create a more balanced story to tell. Here’s more on that from the directors:

“That’s what kind of fires us up, I think, on a storytelling level, to be honest with you. Because when you do have powerful characters, you have to work that much harder to find their vulnerabilities and complexities. And Joe was mentioning on a storytelling level… and keep the stakes high! Because that’s where those characters are vulnerable. And actually, that makes for great drama, and you run in that direction. As storytellers, that’s been one of the most fun things we’ve had working with these characters is figuring out ways into them where they are vulnerable and they aren’t all powerful.”

It seems that Joe and Anthony Russo plan to raise the stakes even more for the Avengers so that characters do not become more powerful than the others or villains. It seems the Russo Brothers know the Marvel character well and plan to bring more of Carol’s humanity to Avengers: Endgame.
