During the Super Bowl game this evening, Disney and Marvel Studios debuted a new 30-second TV spot for this year’s Avengers: Endgame. The TV spot was just as cryptic as the first trailer for the film was but within those exciting 30-seconds, fans finally got a glimpse at how much the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed since Thanos (Josh Brolin) snapped his fingers to enact his devastating plan at the end of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War.
The new TV-spot for Avengers: Endgame focused primarily on our Earth-bound heroes, such as Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Rhodie (Don Cheadle), and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). The most eye-opening aspect of the trailer though was the first look at how Earth has changed post-snap. The 30-second spot reveals an MCU covered in blue, making it feel so cold and desolate.
The streets in the footage seem empty except for the boats and cars that still remain piled up against one another. The only non-superheroes we even get a glimpse at in the trailer are out-of-focus characters sitting with Captain America during his group meeting at the beginning of the TV spot. The MCU hasn’t really gone to places as dark as this before besides, obviously, some of the darker moments in Avengers: Infinity War and even 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. All of the MCU movies certainly have their dark, dramatic moments but primarily, they usually end up being a fun adventure film.
This is what made the climax of Infinity War so heartbreaking, despite the fact that many fans already know that at least some of the dead heroes will be returning, such as Spider-Man (Tom Holland). This Super Bowl spot for Endgame certainly seems to be channeling the dark mood fans felt at the end of Infinity War and it also avoided any hints at humor. The first trailer for the film revealed that it will not shy away from jokes but this new collection of footage focused more on danger and fear than adventure and fun.
