Speaking with Business Insider, the directing duo behind the last two Captain America films, as well as 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and its upcoming follow-up, commented on the challenge of adapting one of DC Comics’ biggest superheroes and explained why Superman’s strength is what makes him the most difficult to adapt for the cinema. Anthony said:
“The more powerful a character is, the more difficult to deal with that character on a narrative level. We always look for vulnerabilities in characters because that’s where characters become interesting. They’re superficially interesting in their strength, but they get much more depth when you find where they don’t have that kind of strength. In general, the more powerful a character is, the more tricky that is.”
While Henry Cavill returned as Superman in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, the character has yet to receive a proper sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel which kicked off the current DC cinematic universe. The future of Cavill’s Superman now hangs in the balance with the actor walking away from negotiations to return for a future appearance as Superman in September.
Joe Russo explained the trouble behind adapting and developing a compelling story for the Last Son of Krypton:
“He’s a very difficult character. You have to find an emotional flaw or weakness in the character in order to make them vulnerable.”
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame is expected to star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Josh Brolin and Chris Pratt.
A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
Avengers: Endgame is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 26, 2019.
