‘Avengers: Endgame’ Theory Claims Main Villain Will Be Thanos From The Past

A new fan theory suggests the main villain of Avengers: Endgame will be a more sinister version of Thanos from the past.

Avengers: Infinity War concluded with Thanos successfully acquiring the Infinity Stones and using their power to eradicate half of the population in the universe. With his mission complete, Thanos retired to a remote planet to live a quiet life as a farmer, prompting Reddit user u/ak2sup to wonder why the Mad Titan would abandon his peaceful life to take on the Avengers in Endgame. Now, the user proposes that the main villain of Endgame will actually be a past version of Thanos whom our heroes will encounter when they travel back in time to undo the Mad Titan’s decimation.

Fans have been speculating that time travel will play a key role in the fourth Avengers film ever since set photos indicated our heroes would somehow revisit 2012’s Battle of New York. Some have theorized the surviving heroes of Infinity War will travel back in time to collect the Infinity Stones and prevent Thanos from acquiring them in the first place, but Reddit user u/ak2sup notes such a plan would disrupt the timeline as a handful of them played key roles in important events, such as bringing Vision to life or driving the main plot of Guardians of the Galaxy. Instead, the user proposes the Avengers will travel back to the battle of New York using the Quantum Real, where they will defeat and potentially kill a double bladed Chitauri Sword-wielding Thanos.

A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame is expected to star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Josh Brolin and Chris Pratt.

Avengers: Endgame is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 26, 2019.
