Recently through the forums of Reddit, a user that goes by the name of farores_winds published a theory that explains how Captain America might sacrifice himself and that could lead Iron Man to retire. You can check out the theoriy below.
The theory explains the story arc for both Captain America and Iron Man as it has been laid out throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain America began his story wanting to protect others and save lives, but things changed for the character when he met Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter. For a moment, it seemed he wanted a different life than what he had planned and throughout the films over the years this made more sense. He never forgot about Peggy and it seemed as though he would visit her each time he could. He wanted to be with her more than anything but the world needed saving.
As for Iron Man, he was a person who did not believe himself to be a hero at the beginning. Throughout the years he fought the threats that would come his way and harm others, especially those close to him. Iron Man was a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist that over time changed. He no longer wanted to be alone and fell in love with Pepper Potts. Last we saw of the two, they were jogging and he was explaining a dream in which they had a child. Iron Man’s new ambition or dream is to have a family.
Now, this theory suggests that in order for Iron Man to have that dream, Captain America will sacrifice himself so that it may become a reality. He would give Tony the opportunity to have what he always wished was possible for him. According to this theory, Cap will sacrifice himself at the final battle with Thanos to save Tony which could lead to Tony retiring Iron Man and having a family.
