‘Avengers: Endgame’ Co-Writer Reveals War Machine Was Vice President In An Early Draft

Avengers: Endgame co-writer Christopher Markus revealed that in an early draft for the film, Don Cheadle’s War Machine served as Vice President of the United States.

In a recent interview with comicbook.com, Markus revealed that War Machine’s role in Avengers: Endgame could’ve been a little bit different than what we ended up seeing. As audiences know, Avengers: Endgame flashes forward five years after the events of Avengers: Infinity War in which Thanos wiped out 50% of all living creatures in the universe. In an earlier draft, War Machine pursued a career in American politics and eventually became Vice President James Rhodes.

Markus revealed the story detail and briefly explained why it was dropped from the final version of Avengers: Endgame: 

“We took it out because it didn’t have any story weight, but I believe that during one draft, in the five year jump, Rhodey became Vice President. Vice President Rhodey.”

War Machine survived the events of Avengers: Endgame and was one of the last people to say goodbye to his best friend, Tony Stark/Iron Man. Along with the rest of the surviving Avengers, War Machine paid his respects to the fallen hero at his funeral, where he is shown mourning with Happy Hogan as the latter puts his hand around his shoulder in comfort.

The future of Don Cheadle’s War Machine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains unknown, but given that he remains alive, it is likely that audiences will reunite with him in a future film/TV series. Perhaps War Machine eventually becomes Vice President of the United States in the future as well!
