The final design for Ebony Maw is one of the most memorable character designs of the film. This is not only due to how well it adapts the likeness of Ebony Maw from the comics, but of course due to the fact that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) compares his appearance to that of Squidward Tentacles from SpongeBob SquarePants or in the case of the French dub, Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series.
But before the final design for Ebony Maw ended up reflecting that of SpongeBob’s cynical neighbor, other designs were developed. Concept artist Jerad S. Marantz shared his own take on Ebony Maw, before Ryan Meinerding’s design was chosen:
One can certainly sense more of a Voldemort vibe from this design compared to the Squidward look from the official design chosen for the film.
Ebony Maw ends up getting sucked into space thanks to Tony Stark and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) pulling an Aliens (1986) on him. Either way, he only appeared in the first half of the film, but Ebony Maw will always be remembered as perhaps the most memorable member of the Black Order.
