Shaun Escayg, Creative Director for the upcoming Avengers Project video game by Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics, and EIDOS Montreal, recently shared a tweet briefly updating the status of the development of the game. He tweeted this on Friday:
The game was announced on January 2017, as part of a deal between Marvel and publisher Square Enix. The game is being developed by studios Crystal Dynamics and EIDOS Montreal.
Little is known about it. In fact, this update is the most we’ve had in a while and we still don’t a have a specific release date for the game. Its reveal trailer, presented in 2017, only shows brief glimpses of items related to characters like Captain America, Thor, Hulk and Iron Man, though nothing more has been shared by Escayg’s team as of today. The popular theory about this video game is that it will be something like an MMO or an RPG, due to Square Enix’s background experience with the Final Fantasy series. Other theories suggest that it may be a single player adventure game, due to Crystal Dynamics’ background with the Tomb Raider reboot in past years.
The most recent Avengers outings on video game consoles have been in the LEGO series and in Marvel Heroes Omega, an MMO featuring most of Marvel’s greatest superheroes which had its servers shut down months after it was released. Right now, most Marvel superheroes are heavily featured in mobile games like Marvel Strike Force, Marvel Contest of Champions, Marvel Future Fight, and others.
