Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame followed our heroes as they traveled back in time to collect the Infinity Stones and use them to reverse Thanos’ devastation. While they were ultimately successful in their mission, a version of Thanos from the past followed our heroes back to the present and led his army in a battle against nearly every hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The climactic showdown concluded with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man using the Infinity Stones to eradicate Thanos and his forces, but the surge of energy from the stones proved to be too powerful for him to handle and he passed away on the battlefield surrounded by loved ones.
Of course, comic book fans know death is not always permanent and that there a number of creative ways Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man could return, with some fans speculating he could appear a through A.I. or a pre-recorded hologram. However, Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo reaffirmed that Robert Downey Jr’s time as Iron Man has come to an end:
“Tony’s dead, you know?. That’s it for Robert. He’s done.”
