For those of you unaware, during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange told Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy that the conflict with Thanos could only be resolved in one of 14 million futures he was able to see. As we came to understand one year later during Avengers: Endgame, the only way involved Iron Man using a new Infinity Gauntlet on Thanos himself. The strain of the snap was ultimately too much for Tony Stark and he passed away before the film ended.
Several fan theories have spawned indicating that there could have been other possibilities in order for Iron Man to survive the events of Avengers: Endgame. Nevertheless, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely took it upon themselves to deny these theories and maintain that the only way everything would have worked out is if Tony Stark sacrificed himself:
“The only way this works is if Tony dies. If you go back and watch Infinity War, when [Strange] says ‘one,’ Benedict … is just choked on emotion. Now that you know the end, go back and watch that moment. He means, ‘You’re going to have to die, Tony.'”

Avengers: Endgame concludes what Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige dubbed as ‘The Infinity Saga’ or what we’ve seen as Thanos’ secret quest for the powerful Infinity Stones. This Saga heavily featured characters like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America and Avengers: Endgame wraps up the stories which started with Iron Man way back in 2008.
