Warner Bros. & DC’s ‘Batgirl’ Movie Gets A New Writer

Warner Bros. and DC's Batgirl movie may have lost Joss Whedon, but the project is still moving forward with a new writer.

The Batgirl movie may have lost Joss Whedon, but the project is still moving forward with a new writer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has hired Christina Hodson to pen the script for the movie, which was said to be based on The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl! story arc from DC Comics at the time Whedon was still on board. Whedon was originally set to write, direct and produce the project, but left after a failed attempt to crack the story.

Written and drawn by legendary comic creators Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino, The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl! tells the classic origin story of Barbara Gordona: She’s a librarian and the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, and dons the Batgirl costume to help Batman and Robin in their battle with the villainous Killer Moth. It’s unclear if Hodson’s new script will be adapting the same story as Whedon’s.

Batgirl will serve to expand the DC Extended Universe launched by Zack Snyder and is one of the many in-development DC projects at Warner Brothers. The list includes The BatmanFlashpointMan of Steel 2NightwingCyborgGotham City SirensGreen Lantern CorpsBlack Adam, New Gods, Booster Gold and Justice League Dark.

Warner Bros. has quite a few DC Films projects on the horizon. Aquaman is up first, hitting theaters on December 21, 2018, followed by Shazam! on April 5, 2019. There’s also the Wonder Woman sequel, which is slated for a November 1, 2019 release.
