Even with the recent massive success of Aquaman and the upcoming releases of Shazam! and Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) the future of the DCEU is largely unknown, so, unfortunately, we may never get to see Batgirl in the shared DC universe. Also, with Ben Affleck himself appearing recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live to proclaim “I’m Not Batman?..”, it’s clear that his tenure as Batman in the DCEU is over.
Regardless of what role Batman will play in the future DCEU, it’s really cool to see a variation of what Batgirl could have looked like being portrayed by Jena Malone in Batman v Superman! If you look closely at the picture the suit definitely shares some similarities and design work to Ben Affleck’s suit donned in Batman v Superman. The texture of the suit and the bat-symbol both have a very heavy DCEU-Batman vibe.
Now if Jena Malone’s name sounds familiar being tied to a DCEU story this is because it was previously heavily rumored that Jena Malone’s role in Batman v Superman would, in fact, be portraying Batgirl and/or pre-Batgirl, Barbara Gordon. She was spotted on the Batman v Superman set and at the time it seemed there was a lot of secrecy surrounding Malone’s role. However, to the disappointment of fans, not only did she not end up playing Batgirl, her entire scene was cut from the theatrical release of Batman v Superman.
In the lengthy 3-hour ultimate cut of the film you can see Jena Malone’s role, however, she was portraying a S.T.A.R Labs scientist, not the cowled hero. Hopefully, with the success of Aquaman, this has revitalized the future of the DCEU as it would put smiles on fans faces to see a continued shared DC film universe.
