Ranking Batman’s Suits On Film

There have been countless iterations of Batman and his various wardrobes. Whether in comics, cartoons, or even video games, we tend to see a new look for Batman pretty much on a yearly basis. The list ranks all live action feature film Batsuits from worst to best. This is of course just one opinion out of many, not everyone will agree with this list and I encourage everyone to rank your favorite Batsuits in the comments below! 8. Batman & Robin - George Clooney Probably the most infamous iteration of all, who can't forget those eye burning bat nipples!? While Joel Schumacher I'm sure had the best of intentions, and on paper having an anatomically correct costume may have sounded like an interesting take, the end result just struck the wrong chord with audiences. Let's also not forget the third act costume change for no reason besides trying to sell more toys. Everything going on in this film and these Batman costumes just make me do a facepalm. 7. Batman: The Movie - Adam West So, I won't lie to you, I find this to be a great costume. Ultimately that's the problem, it looks like a costume and not a suit. As a fan of Adam West's TV show and this movie I could never talk down on this look. Today's day and age we think of Batman rather differently and this iteration is a relic of the past, none-the-less a special place in many of our hearts. 6. Batman Forever - Val Kilmer A part of me really wanted to put this one before Adam West's costume. After some thought, I actually dig this costume. It's very similar to Tim Burton's first two iterations but made for a new actor and designed a bit sleeker. I'm not one that will hate on this film, I for the most part still really enjoy it. The batsuit also compliments the film and the actor quite well. 5. Batman Begins - Christian Bale The beginning of a historic trilogy and the beginning of Bruce Wayne's trial and error with perfecting his Batsuit. While this Batsuit was a very refreshing look compared to the previous film we got (Batman & Robin), it has not aged as well as some. The suit itself looks a bit clunky and we never really got a decently shot fight scene with this one. Could that be due to the actual mobility of the suit? Probably. In the end, it was the suit we needed at the time, but since then Bale's Bruce Wayne got the one he really deserved. 4. Batman - Michael Keaton This film, this suit was a game changer. We finally got to see the dark Batman all us comic book sweaties have been wanting to see. When people think of Batman their minds won't immediately go to Adam West's incarnation. Batman was finally cool and this batsuit was the beginning of it all. 3. Batman Returns - Michael Keaton Some may argue and believe the 1989 Batsuit was better, while that was a memorable version I find this one to be underrated and superior. They look very similar. The cape/cowl and utility belt aren't much different, but like most sequels the budget gets bigger and more time for refinement. The rubber for the suit is sleeker and looks all around better made. The chest piece is the biggest difference and for Batman Returns it worked really well for the overall aesthetic and design of the film. 2. The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises - Christian Bale A Batsuit a Bruce Wayne can finally love is here. Not only does it look sleek and tactical, but our old friend Bruce can finally turn his head! It only took five (six if you include Adam West) Batman films to get the costume to function this way. With this improvement we also got to see Batman fight extensively without being muffled by choppy editing. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises puts a sigh of relief to many fans who wanted to see a very practical Batsuit that not only got the job done, but looked freaking cool while doing it. This suit still holds dear to many people's heart as their number one favorite and you can't blame them. It was hard to believe there could be a suit out there to 1-up this one until... 1. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Ben Affleck Well here it is. Who isn't surprised? Zack Snyder delivered to us one hell of a Batman and along with it the most badass and comic book accurate Batsuit of all time. Hollywood came to the realization that Batman doesn't need to be in all black to be cool and getting a brute actor to fill this suit equals to be a mighty beast not to be reckoned with. In this suit we also got one of the best Batman fight scenes of all time, the warehouse scene in Batman v Superman is just jaw dropping. Not only did we get this suit, we got a trench coat, goggle wearing knightmare Batman and the classic armored suit Batman from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Some may argue that the armored suit is just as, if not even cooler than the standard batsuit. Ultimately, there's very little to complain about with this suit and what it can do and as a fan of the comic books and superhero films I cannot wait to see what they do next for Batman in the DCEU. So there you have it. Like I said, there are a ton of Batman costume iterations out there and this list is just ranking a few of them. With Zack Snyder tweeting a new photo of Batman in a tactical suit in Justice League you just can't stop getting excited about what the future of Batman has in store for us.
