In speaking with The Wrap, Batwoman executive producer Sarah Schechter commented on they are approaching the character in a world without The Caped Crusader, saying that the show will take place in a post-Batman version of Gotham City. Schechter elaborated on how that informs the narrative of the show:
“Batman is missing. What does that do when your heroes are gone and who steps into that void?”
So without a Batman to swoop in and save the day, it sounds like Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, has taken it upon herself to step up in the name of the Bat. It is an interesting take that allows storytellers to freely tell their own version of the character, Schecter says:
“What’s great about the restriction of just focusing on Batwoman is that we have to build a world for our character. It’s a character that people don’t really know.”
It sound like the folks over at the CW have found a take on Batwoman that they like as well as a way to tell her story without the shadow of the bat hanging over the entire series for its entire run and that can only be a good thing if Warner Bros. insists on not letting them use Batman.
What do you make of this take on Batwoman? Do you think it will better serve the character? Or are you tired of Batman-esque shows not being able to actually use Batman? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Here is the reported plot synopsis for Batwoman:
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.
Ruby Rose’s version of Batwoman was first introduced in last year’s CW crossover television event Elseworlds alongside the likes of established stars as The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. Audiences were largely taken with the character and now she will indeed get her own standalone television series. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding The CW’s Batwoman pilot as soon as more information becomes available.
