The upcoming Elseworlds crossover will introduce Batwoman and Gotham City to the Arrowverse ahead of the DC heroine’s potential solo series, leaving many fans to wonder why Batman will be absent from the three-night event. Batwoman executive producer and Elseworlds consultant Caroline Dries explained that Batman will have been missing for several years and his absence has left Gotham City a virtual ghost town:
“Our approach is: What does Gotham look like after the Batman has been gone for three years? So if you have the law and order, protector, and hope gone, what happens as a result?. Some people are thriving in his absence because now they can start to do their own thing without the oversight. A lot of other people are suffering and they’re losing hope, and the city itself and infrastructure is falling apart. So it’s not a happy place. Our guys walk into a grimy, scary Gotham.”
In fact, Batman will be regarded as an urban legend to some, including members of the Arrowverse Trinity such as Oliver Queen, according to Grant Gustin:
“Oliver is like,’ He’s not real! They’ve made him up! It’s a hoax just to scare the citizens.’ Barry is flabbergasted by that and all he wants to do in Gotham is meet Batman. It’s a pretty funny scene.”
The upcoming Elseworlds crossover will find Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl visiting Gotham City after learning about the machinations of a sinister Arkham Asylum doctor. The event will mark the introduction of Ruby Rose as Batwoman and the first appearance of Gotham City in the Arrowverse. Superman will also appear in the crossover, with Tyler Hoechlin reprising the role from Supergirl, and Grimm star Elizabeth Tulloch will portray Lois Lane in the character’s Arrowverse debut.
The 2018 Elseworlds crossover starts with a special episode of The Flash on Sunday, December 9 and continues with Arrow on Monday, December 10. The three-night event will then conclude with Supergirl on Tuesday, December 11.
All three entries will air at 8:00 p.m. ET on their respective nights.
