Today Netflix extended a quite unusual dare to all of their readers on Twitter. They posted this short video featuring Heath Ledger’s Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which is arguably the best version of The Prince Clown of Crime in recent years. The video shows the best moments of the Joker in the movie: from the pencil trick on the mob, passing through Bruce Wayne’s conversation with Alfred Pennyworth on his maniacal and murderous persona, and finally showing that hospital explosion scene, which Ledger improvised almost entirely mind you:
Answering Netflix’s dare, many people on Twitter started to name their favorites. MCU’s Loki, MCU’s Thanos, Star Wars‘ Darth Vader, Jessica Jones‘ Killgrave, and Daredevil‘s Kingpin are some of the villains mentioned. However, Netflix makes a strong point nominating Ledger’s Joker as the most prominent villain ever. The Dark Knight helped to revive the superhero genre back in 2008 and we can argue that thanks to Christopher Nolan, movies like Logan, Man of Steel or Aquaman were made; a point can even be made that the Marvel Cinematic Universe owes these Batman movies their success.
In any case, Ledger’s Oscar-nominated performance went down in history as one of the moments that the Academy recognized worthiness in a superhero flick. His portrayal as the Prince Clown Of Crime is still very much imbued in the pop culture and it will for years to come.
