‘Batman v Superman’: Allegory Video Takes A New Look At The Film

Fans of Zack Synder’s films know the director has a penchant for including visual references in his work. When you combine Snyder with Superman, a character who has long had narrative and visual parallels with religious figures and who is a symbol in his own right, it is not surprising that you would end up with a film loaded with metaphors and homages to other works. Now, Vimeo user V had put together a trailer comparing lines of dialogue and the composition of shots to previous works of various formats which frame the film as an allegory.

The video compares shots to previous films, including Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, it also notes how the composition of the frame and the position of actors in certain shots is reminiscent of classic art works such as Alfred Stevens’ “The Bath”. The comparison to religious stories and images is also noted, with the video citing moments such as the ‘Knightmare’ sequence as an allegory for the crucifixion.

Considering the number of references to gods and false idols featured in the film, it is not surprising to learn that there are several visual references to religious imagery in Batman v. Superman. However, fans may be surprised to see just how perfectly symmetrical many of these shots are to the imagery of previous films and artwork. Check out the video below!
