‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ Exceeds Projections Yet Again; Beats ‘The Hunger Games’ Record

Warner Bros. is likely very happy at the moment following a number of blockbuster box office failures last year. Despite the film being critically ripped to shreds, audiences are filling theaters for Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The film is continually exceeding projections at the box office and is set to post the biggest pre-summer opening day with $81.3M, which puts it well ahead of the previous record holder Furious 7 ($67.4M). The film is also set to break another record and take the biggest pre-summer opening weekend away from The Hunger Games ($152.2M) with a very nice $171M.

Just earlier today it was projected that the film could hit $160M, so there’s definitely a chance we might see that number rise again. The box office results are very interesting considering the film was thrashed by critics. However, despite these reviews, the film landed a B Cinemascore and has held a steady 74% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. With no competition at the box office next week, the film will likely take the top spot but how big of a drop remains to be seen. Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.

UPDATE: While not a much higher number than initially reported, it looks like Batman v Superman is set to hit $172 million through Easter Sunday. This is the fourth highest opening for a comic book film and the best of any Batman film to date. That title was previously held by The Dark Knight Rises which debuted to $160.9M. Should the film hit that $180M mark, it could also become the fifth highest domestic opening to date. There’s a chance the film could tick a bit higher, so stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE 2: Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice brought in an estimated $82 million at the North American box office on Friday. Overseas, the movie took an additional $67.2 million for a current international total of $115 million. As of right now, the movie is nearing the $200 million mark worldwide. What do you guys think?  Expect more updates soon.
