This unfortunately means that Warner Brothers’ kickoff to the DCEU may not even reach the $350 million I predicted this past weekend. The film continues to rapidly lose steam without any true competition to hurt its number. This weekend sees the release of Disney’s Jungle Book, the film’s first true competitor, which is tracking to open around $78 million. Batman v Superman meanwhile is expected to make around $10 million this weekend. It is yet to be seen whether Batman v Superman can even top Guardians of the Galaxy‘s $333 million.
At the global box office, the film also reached an important mark. As of yesterday, the film has made $800 million worldwide. This is the number reports suggested the film needed to make in order to be profitable. One cannot deny that this film is a success but it is almost impossible now that it will hit the $1 billion dollars Warner Brothers wished it would have. It is certainly surprising that a movie starring the two greatest icons of American culture is unlikely to hit that target.
