‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reboot In The Works From ‘Mr. Robot’ Creator On NBC Streaming Service

Mr. Robot Sam Esmail creator is developing a new Battlestar Galactica series for the NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock.

Earlier this year, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail closed a huge four-year overall deal with NBCU’s Universal Content Productions. Now,  NBCUniversal has announced that Esmail is working on a Battlestar Galactica reboot for its streaming service, which is expected to launch in April 2020.

Sam Esmail is best known for his work on the UCP-produced Mr. Robot, which won two Emmy awards in 2016. In addition to Mr. Robot, Esmail also produces two others series for Universal Content Productions — the anthology series Briarpatch starring Rosario Dawson and Amazon’s Homecoming with Julia Roberts and Bobby Cannavale.

Last year, Universal Pictures tapped Jay Basu to rewrite the script of its Battlestar Galactiva movie. An earlier draft of the screenplay was penned by Lisa Joy, the co-creator and executive producer of HBO’s Westworld.

The original Battlestar Galactica series debuted in September 1978 and ran until April 1979. The sci-fi series was revived as Galactica 1980 following a write-in campaign, though the spin-off only lasted 10 episodes. In 2003, Battlestar Galactica was remade as a three-hour Sci-Fi Channel miniseries that served as a backdoor pilot to a weekly television show that debuted in 2004. The Award-winning series, which starred Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, ran for four seasons before concluding on March 20, 2009. The franchise has also produced spin-off shows, webisodes and books.
